Federal Regulations
The Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require employers to:
• Develop procedures for investigating dangerous indoor air quality (IAQ) situations
• Appoint a qualified person to set written instructions for HVAC system operation, inspection, testing, cleaning and maintenance
• Keep records of IAQ complaints and investigations for at least 5 years

Provincial/Territorial Regulations
Most jurisdictions have regulations requiring:
• Adequate supply of fresh air in indoor workplaces
• Standards for ventilation system design, operation, cleaning and maintenance
Specific requirements vary by province/territory.

Standards and Guidelines
• ASHRAE Standard 62.1 - Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality is commonly referenced
• Health Canada has published Indoor Air Reference Levels for various contaminants
• The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) also provides relevant standards

Key Recommendations
• Maintain relative humidity between 30-50%
• Keep air velocity below 0.2 m/s for comfort
• Use HVAC systems with proper filtration
• Regularly inspect, clean and maintain ventilation systems
• Investigate IAQ complaints promptly
